Bring Your Own Project Days
Beginners & Improvers Welcome • Friday 9:30-15:30 'Hop on' and 'Hop off' Class.
Course Description
Immerse yourself in ‘Bring Your Own’ project classes and embark upon the journey of restoring your furniture. An ideal class for beginners or improvers. This is a weekly class on a Friday which can be booked, here, as a single day, or in a discounted block booking of 4 Fridays on a separate listing. If you want to try out upholstery or 'hop on' and 'hop off' when you need some guidance, or have the time, this class is for you. Timings & dates: This class is on Friday from 9:30am-3:30pm. You will be learning in a relaxed but purposeful environment with plentiful tea, coffee and biscuits. Class sizes: A maximum of 3 students per session, so you will get plenty of guidance. Projects: This is determined by your choice of chair and what the project needs. Traditional & modern methods are both taught - traditional methods are more time consuming. You can recover your furniture, which entails taking off the top fabric only. This option is faster but requires a sound base of stuffings. Or you can reupholster, this involves ripping off all layers until you get to the bare frame and rebuilding it from there. This option takes twice as long but is a fascinating process. An ideal beginners project would be a footstool, drop in dining chair pads or a covered dining chair. A nursing chair would be an ideal intermediate or 'improver's' project. A wing-chair or small arm chair would be an advanced project, which also requires the sewing of a box cushion. A wing back chair can take 8 sessions Upon booking, Katie will request that you email a photo of your project. Just to check that it is a suitable piece. Your wooden frame should be sound and not require repair. Tuition: Traditional or modern techniques taught, full re-upholstery or recovering using demonstrations and one-to-one work with Katie. Preparation: you will need to bring along a chair or frame and supply top cover fabric. You're welcome to remove coverings during the class to receive guidance on the proper stripping techniques....but it saves time to bring your furniture stripped of old coverings so you can dive straight in to the upholstery! Tool hire and sundries included. Further materials (e.g foam, hessian) will be noted and charged at a student discount rate at the end of the session. Available in either half or full-meter widths.
