Course Description

An ideal class if you've tried out upholstery before. You may want to try your next project e.g. a nursing chair or more advanced project such as a wingback that will take several sessions. You could also learn a variety of techniques on 2 smaller, but different pieces. TO BOOK CONTACT KATIE VIA THE 'CONTACT US' PAGE OR GIVE HER A CALL to DISCUSS. Timings & dates: Fridays 9:30am-3:30pm, during 2024. Book any 4 Fridays at a discount from the daily booking price. (Dates do not have to be consecutive, but must within 3 months and pre-arranged). You will have a 'good run' at your project, and can work on your project between sessions, if you wish. You choose the days to fit around your commitments. You will be learning in a relaxed but purposeful environment. Class sizes: A maximum of 3 students per session, so you will get plenty of personal guidance. Projects: This is determined by your choice of chair and what the project needs. Traditional & modern methods are both taught - traditional methods are enthralling, involving natural materials and methods used since the 17th century! Please also consider if your chair needs reupholstering or recovering. You can recover your furniture, which entails taking off the top fabric only. This option is faster but requires stuffings to be sturdy . Or you can reupholster, this involves ripping off all layers until you get to the bare frame and rebuild it from there - this takes twice as long but is a fascinating process. A traditional nursing chair would be an ideal intermediate or 'improver's' project for the 4- weeks. A wing-chair or small arm chair would be an advanced project. As a guide, a wing back chair can take 8 sessions. Upon booking, Katie will request that you email a photo of your project. She will check that it is a suitable piece; all chairs are different. Ideally, your wooden frame should be sound and not require extensive repair. Tuition: Traditional or modern techniques taught, full re-upholstery or recovering using demonstrations and one-to-one work with Katie. Preparation: you will need to bring along a chair or frame and supply top cover fabric. You're welcome to remove coverings during the class to receive guidance on the proper stripping techniques. In this case, it is advisable to bring the piece along to the first session to receive tuition and then complete the process at home. Tool hire and sundries included. Additional materials at trade prices + £2 handling fee per order.
